What Dr. Messina's Fellowship Award Means for Your Dental Care

July 8th, 2026

I'm honored to share that I recently received my Fellowship Award (FAGD) from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) during the organization's annual meeting in Las Vegas last month.

While this is certainly a meaningful professional milestone for me, what matters most is what it means for my patients here at home in Louisville and the surrounding communities of Boulder, Broomfield, Erie, and Lafayette.

What Is the FAGD?

The Fellowship Award is one of the Academy of General Dentistry's highest professional distinctions. It recognizes dentists who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to continuing education and lifelong learning.

To earn the FAGD designation, a dentist must:

  • Complete 500 or more hours of continuing education in a wide variety of dental disciplines.
  • Earn continuing education credits across numerous clinical subjects, ensuring broad knowledge rather than expertise in just one area.
  • Pass a rigorous and comprehensive examination covering all aspects of general dentistry.
  • Maintain membership in the Academy of General Dentistry and remain committed to ongoing professional development.

This process often takes many years to complete and reflects a dedication to staying current with advances in dentistry. Only 6% of dentists ever achieve this Fellowship distinction, and I'm honored to be counted among these professionals who have dedicated themselves to learning, growing, and better serving our communities and the patients who entrust us with their care.

Why Continuing Education Matters

Dentistry is constantly evolving. New materials, technologies, research, and treatment techniques are introduced every year.

While every licensed Colorado dentist completes continuing education requirements, my team and I believe in going above and beyond in everything we do. Investing hundreds of additional hours allows me to evaluate new research, refine clinical techniques, and offer treatments that are supported by the latest evidence.

My goal has always been simple: provide the highest quality care possible while making every patient feel comfortable, informed, and confident in their treatment.

What This Means for You

Earning my FAGD doesn't change the relationships I've built with my patients—but it reinforces the philosophy that has guided my practice from the beginning.

When you visit our office, you can expect:

  • Comprehensive, evidence-based dental care.
  • Conservative treatment recommendations focused on your long-term oral health.
  • Modern techniques and materials supported by current research.
  • A dentist who is committed to continually improving her skills and knowledge.
  • Personalized care delivered with compassion and attention to detail.

Whether you're coming in for a routine cleaning, cosmetic treatment, restorative care, or help with a dental concern, my commitment is to provide care I'd recommend for my own family.

Thank You

This achievement would not have been possible without the trust of my wonderful patients and the support of my incredible team. It is truly a privilege to care for families throughout Louisville, Boulder, Broomfield, Erie, and Lafayette.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your healthcare journey. I look forward to continuing to serve our Front Range community with the same dedication to excellence that earning the Fellowship Award represents.

Preventive Dentistry in Boulder County, CO: Why Routine Dental Care Saves You Time, Money, and Stress

February 22nd, 2026

If you’re searching for a preventive dentist in Louisville, CO or wondering whether routine dental visits are truly necessary, the answer is simple: prevention is the foundation of long-term oral health.

At our Louisville dental office serving Boulder County families, Dr. Messina believes dentistry should be proactive — not reactive. The most valuable care we provide often happens before you ever feel pain.

What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry focuses on protecting your teeth and gums through:

  • Comprehensive dental exams
  • Professional cleanings
  • Digital X-rays
  • Oral cancer screenings
  • Early cavity detection
  • Gum disease monitoring

Routine visits every six months (or more frequently if you have a history of gum disease) allow us to catch small concerns early — when treatment is more conservative, comfortable, and cost-effective. There are evidence-based benefits of regular dental checkups we simply can't ignore.

If you’re looking for a family dentist in Louisville or Boulder County, our patients love Dr. Messina and Rachel's conservative, patient-centered approach. Prevention is one of the most important services we offer.

Why Preventive Dental Care Saves You Money

Skipping routine dental visits may seem like a way to save money — but untreated issues rarely stay small.

A minor cavity can quickly turn into:

  • A larger filling
  • A crown
  • A root canal
  • Or even tooth loss

Gum inflammation can quietly progress for years before symptoms become obvious.

Early treatment means:

  • Less invasive procedures
  • Lower overall costs
  • Fewer dental emergencies
  • Less stress for you and your family

The Link Between Oral Health and Overall Health

Your oral health impacts your whole-body health.

Oral health and systemic disease research continues to connect gum disease and chronic inflammation with:

  • Heart disease (here is more from the American Heart Association on gum disease and heart disease risk)
  • Diabetes (see the CDC diabetes and oral health statistics)
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Systemic inflammatory conditions

Maintaining regular dental care right here along Colorado's Front Range isn’t just about your smile — it’s about protecting your overall wellbeing. And while Dr. Michelle Messina is a skilled and experienced restorative and cosmetic dentist, she is also passionate about the overall health of every patient in our practice.

What You Can Do Between Visits

The most powerful preventive habits happen at home:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride or nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste (Dr. Messina can make great recommendations on specific products that would work for your particular mouth chemistry)
  • Floss consistently
  • Stay hydrated
  • Wear a custom night guard if recommended (we make them here at our practice!)
  • Keep regular hygiene appointments

And remember: prevention is a partnership. If you're looking for a trusted preventive dentist here in Louisville, Colorado, we would love to care for you. Our practice is proud to serve families throughout Louisville, Lafayette, Superior, Erie, Broomfield, Arvada, and across Boulder County with thoughtful, conservative care in a calm, welcoming environment.
